Sion Hospital’s Breast Milk donation saves over 10,000 newborns

Sion Hospital in Mumbai has set an inspiring example with its breast milk donation program, which has saved over 10,000 newborns in the past five years. As home to Asia’s first breast milk bank, the hospital has received donations from more than 43,000 lactating mothers. This initiative has proven essential in reducing mortality rates among low-weight and premature newborns who rely on donated breast milk for survival and growth.

Started in 1989 by Armida Fernandes, Sion Hospital’s breast milk bank ensures that no infant is left without access to vital nutrition. According to Dr. Mohan Joshi, the dean of Sion Hospital, breast milk contains critical nutrients like hemoglobin and vitamins necessary for infant development. The milk is safely processed and stored, ensuring its quality before being prescribed by doctors to infants who need it most.

With over 2,500 newborns benefiting annually, this initiative has set a benchmark in neonatal care. The hospital’s commitment to spreading awareness and helping other medical institutions set up similar milk banks across Western India further cements its role in fostering a healthier future for newborns.

By addressing the high demand for breast milk donations, Sion Hospital is contributing significantly to improving neonatal outcomes and reducing infant mortality rates. The program is a beacon of hope for countless families, ensuring every child has access to the nutrition they need, regardless of their mother’s ability to breastfeed.
