In a groundbreaking achievement, the dedicated team at AIIMS Bhubaneswar saved the life of a 24-year-old Army jawan using an advanced Extracorporeal Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (eCPR) procedure. This was the first time such a procedure was performed in Odisha, making it a historic milestone in the region’s medical history.
The Case That Made History
The young soldier was referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar on October 1, 2024, in critical condition due to heart failure. Shortly after his arrival, he went into cardiac arrest. Despite 40 minutes of conventional CPR, no cardiac activity was detected, leading the medical team to a crucial decision: declare the patient dead or attempt the cutting-edge eCPR procedure.
Under the leadership of Dr. Srikant Behera, an Intensivist and Adult ECMO specialist, the team chose to proceed with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). This bold decision and their expertise in advanced cardiac care saved the patient’s life.
How the eCPR Procedure Worked
The eCPR procedure began 80 minutes after the cardiac arrest. This involved connecting the patient to ECMO, a life-support system that takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, allowing them to recover. After 40 minutes of eCPR, the patient’s heart started beating irregularly at first. His heart function improved significantly over the next 30 hours, and he was successfully weaned off ECMO after 96 hours.
Unwavering Teamwork and Expertise
This incredible achievement was possible due to the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team. Their efforts extended beyond just restarting the heart. They managed multiple life-threatening complications, showcasing the power of teamwork and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in saving lives.
A Family’s Gratitude
The soldier’s mother expressed her heartfelt gratitude, saying:
“I cannot thank AIIMS Bhubaneswar enough for giving my son a second chance at life. Their skill, compassion, and determination have worked miracles for our family.”
A Message of Hope for Cardiac Arrest Patients
“eCPR, while technically challenging, represents a promising advancement in the treatment of cardiac arrests traditionally deemed fatal. This success marks a milestone in Odisha’s medical history.”
Recognition for a Revolutionary Achievement
“AIIMS Bhubaneswar has always been at the forefront of integrating medical science with technology to deliver pioneering healthcare. This is a testament to our dedication to saving lives and advancing medical practices.” Stated the Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar
The Medical Superintendent also congratulated the team on this remarkable accomplishment.
What is eCPR?
eCPR (Extracorporeal Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) is an advanced life-saving technique where ECMO is used to support the heart and lungs when traditional CPR fails. It is a game-changer for patients who experience prolonged cardiac arrest and are considered beyond conventional treatment.
Why This Matters
This success story is a beacon of hope for patients suffering from cardiac arrest. It also demonstrates the potential of combining medical innovation, technology, and teamwork to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Conclusion
The historic success of the eCPR procedure at AIIMS Bhubaneswar highlights the advancements in critical care and the dedication of healthcare professionals. It sets a new benchmark for life-saving procedures in India and beyond.
