First in Kolkata: Desun Hospital Launches Rooftop Helipad for Emergency Services

In a development move for emergency healthcare in Kolkata, Desun Hospital is set to inaugurate a rooftop helipad on Friday 17 January 2025 becoming the first hospital in the city to introduce this life-saving service. Located on the rooftop of the hospital’s new Annexe II building, the helipad will facilitate faster transportation of critically ill patients, especially from remote areas of Bengal and neighboring states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Revolutionizing Emergency Healthcare in Kolkata

After nearly two years of construction, the helipad is ready to receive air ambulances. This will significantly reduce response times for critical care cases. Currently, patients transported by air ambulance land at Kolkata Airport and then travel to hospitals by road, which takes valuable time. The new helipad will allow air ambulances to land directly at the hospital, streamlining the process and saving lives.

First Test Flight and Future Plans

On Friday, a test flight will mark the helipad’s official launch. A helicopter will take off from the Behala Flying Club and land on the helipad. Desun Hospital’s new building, which houses the helipad, will also include 450 beds, with 120 dedicated to the ICU. The hospital aims to use the helipad for transporting burn and emergency patients.

Shaoli Dutta, Desun Hospital’s director, shared, “This helipad will allow us to address emergency cases faster. Previously, patients transported by air ambulance would need additional time to reach the hospital from the airport. Now, we can provide point-to-point critical care, ensuring better outcomes for patients.”

A Milestone for Eastern India

This helipad is expected to be the first of its kind in Eastern India, paving the way for similar developments in the region. The chairman of ICC Healthcare Wing, praised the initiative, calling it a potential lifeline for critically ill patients. The CEO of Peerless Hospital called it a pioneering move that could save countless lives, and the CEO of Woodlands Hospital noted it as a game-changer for the region’s healthcare infrastructure.

Challenges and Mixed Reactions

While many healthcare professionals and hospitals have applauded this initiative, some have expressed concerns over its practicality. A hospital chain head commented that implementing air ambulance services involves multiple agencies, making it a logistical challenge. Despite these concerns, many believe this step will encourage more hospitals in Kolkata to invest in similar facilities.

What This Means for Doctors and Patients

  • Faster Emergency Care: The helipad ensures quicker transportation of critically ill patients.
  • Improved Patient Outcomes: Reduced travel time allows doctors to provide life-saving interventions sooner.
  • Regional Impact: This service sets a precedent for other hospitals in Kolkata and Eastern India to adopt advanced emergency facilities.

The Way Forward

The introduction of a rooftop helipad at Desun Hospital is a significant leap in improving emergency healthcare services in Kolkata. It reflects the city’s commitment to adopting innovative solutions to save lives. While some challenges remain, this initiative is a step towards a more efficient and accessible healthcare system.

With the support of the healthcare community, this move could inspire other hospitals in Kolkata and beyond to invest in similar advancements, ultimately benefiting patients and transforming the emergency care landscape in India.
