Changing Lifestyle and Reducing Internet Use May Help Prevent Dental Caries in Children

A new study published in BMC Oral Health suggests that problematic internet use (PIU) and unhealthy lifestyle habits are linked to multiple dental caries in children. Dental caries (tooth decay) is a major health concern among school-going children worldwide. This research highlights the need for better lifestyle choices and controlled screen time to protect children’s oral health.

Key Findings from the Study

The study included 13,413 children with an average age of 10.5 years from 110 elementary schools. Researchers found that 25.7% of children had multiple caries, with girls being more affected (27% girls vs. 24.4% boys). The study identified several risk factors for developing dental caries:

1. Poor Lifestyle Habits and Dental Caries

  • Skipping breakfast increased the risk (1.11 times more likely to have cavities).
  • Late bedtime (10–11 p.m.) raised the risk (1.17 times), and sleeping after 11 p.m. made it even worse (1.23 times).
  • Not brushing teeth regularly contributed to more cavities.

2. Problematic Internet Use (PIU) and Dental Caries

  • Children with no family restrictions on screen time had 20% higher chances of developing cavities.
  • Kids with moderate internet addiction (YDQ score 3–4) had 1.17 times more risk of caries.
  • Severe internet addiction (YDQ score ≥5) increased the likelihood to 1.22 times.
  • Boys showed a stronger link between PIU and cavities than girls.

What This Means for Parents and Doctors

The study concludes that poor lifestyle habits and excessive screen time increase the chances of tooth decay in children. Parents and healthcare professionals should focus on developing healthy habits such as: ✔ Encouraging regular meals, including a healthy breakfast.
Setting a proper sleep schedule (before 10 p.m.).
Promoting daily brushing and good oral hygiene.
Limiting screen time and encouraging outdoor activities.

Doctors and healthcare professionals should educate parents about the link between lifestyle, screen time, and dental health. By promoting healthy habits, we can help reduce dental caries in children and improve their overall well-being.

Encourage parents to take small steps today for their child’s healthy future!
