In a significant step towards improving blood transfusion services, the Kerala Blood Transfusion Council has launched the Rare Blood Donor Registry, a database of donors with rare blood groups. Finding suitable blood matches for rare blood groups is often a major challenge in medical emergencies. This new registry aims to solve this problem by identifying and connecting eligible donors.
The Rare Blood Donor Registry was officially launched at the National Conclave of Blood Transfusion Services held in Kochi. Representatives from several states participated in the event. State Health Minister Veena George highlighted that the initiative will make it easier to find rare blood group donors and save more lives.
How the Registry Works
- The registry contains information on donors with rare blood groups across Kerala.
- The project was completed in collaboration with government medical colleges in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode.
- The Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram has been designated as the state nodal center for managing this initiative.
- So far, 3,000 rare blood donors have been registered, and the database will continue to expand.
Future Plans
The Department of Central Blood Transfusion Services plans to extend this registry across the country. This will ensure that patients with rare blood groups have quicker and more reliable access to compatible donors.
Why This Matters
Rare blood groups are difficult to match during emergencies, often putting patients’ lives at risk. This initiative will enhance patient care by creating a centralized system to locate rare blood donors quickly. It also promotes a culture of voluntary blood donation, encouraging more people to participate.
If you have a rare blood group, consider registering as a donor. Your contribution could save a life in critical situations. Contact your nearest government medical college or blood bank to learn more about how to join the Rare Blood Donor Registry.
