A recent study published in the International Journal of Yoga Therapy highlights the benefits of yoga for improving insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a common endocrine disorder that affects women of reproductive age, leading to hormonal imbalances, irregular menstrual cycles, and metabolic issues like insulin resistance, obesity, and glucose intolerance. These metabolic problems can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Why This Study is Important
Managing PCOS typically involves lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, exercise, and medications like metformin. In recent years, yoga has gained attention as a holistic and supportive therapy for improving metabolic health. The study conducted by Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pune, evaluated the effect of yoga on insulin resistance in newly diagnosed women with PCOS.
How the Study Was Conducted
The study enrolled 35 women with PCOS who followed a 12-week yoga program that included:
- Kriya (cleansing practices)
- Postures (asanas)
- Breathwork (pranayama)
Participants practiced yoga six days a week. Insulin resistance was measured before and after the program using the HOMA-IR test.
Key Results
- Body weight reduced from 64.90 kg to 61.53 kg.
- BMI decreased from 25.66 kg/m² to 24.33 kg/m².
- Fasting blood sugar dropped from 95.73 mg/dL to 91.83 mg/dL.
- Fasting insulin levels fell from 14.89 μU/mL to 11.47 μU/mL.
- HOMA-IR scores improved from 3.76 to 2.72, indicating better insulin sensitivity.
What This Means for Women with PCOS
The results suggest that yoga can help improve insulin resistance and may serve as a complementary therapy for managing PCOS alongside conventional treatments. Yoga’s positive effects on carbohydrate metabolism, body weight, and stress reduction may contribute to overall better health outcomes for women with PCOS.
