Kerala Launches Free Growth Hormone Therapy Under KARE Scheme

Kerala has taken a big step in rare disease care by launching free growth hormone therapy under the KARE (Kerala United Against Rare Diseases) scheme. This initiative aims to help children with growth hormone deficiency (GH deficiency) and Turner syndrome get the treatment they need without the high costs.

Why is Growth Hormone Therapy Important?

Growth hormone (GH) is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a vital role in a child’s growth, muscle development, and overall health. A deficiency in GH can cause stunted growth, muscle weakness, fatigue, and bone fragility. If left untreated, it can lead to severe physical complications. Early detection and treatment can help children grow properly and lead healthier lives.

KARE Scheme: A Lifesaver for Children

On World Rare Disease Day, Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced that growth hormone treatment is now free under the KARE scheme. The government is committed to early detection and expert treatment for rare diseases. The SAT Hospital, part of the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, has been upgraded to a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases to provide the best care for affected children.

How Many Children Are Benefiting?

As part of this initiative, 20 children have already started growth hormone therapy:

  • 14 children diagnosed with Turner syndrome
  • 6 children with GH deficiency

A multidisciplinary team of doctors conducted detailed examinations before administering the treatment, ensuring the best care for these children.

Other Rare Disease Treatments Under KARE

The KARE project, launched in February 2024, is a pioneering initiative in rare disease care. Apart from growth hormone therapy, Kerala has also introduced Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) for rare diseases at SAT Hospital. Currently, 100 children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) are receiving specialized treatment under this scheme.

A Brighter Future for Children with Rare Diseases

The launch of free growth hormone therapy under the KARE scheme is a major step forward in healthcare. By ensuring that expensive treatments are available free of cost, the Kerala government is improving the lives of children with rare diseases.
