Good sleep is the foundation of good health. But millions of people in India suffer silently from sleep disorders like Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)—often without even knowing it. In a major step forward, AIIMS Nagpur has opened a new state-of-the-art Sleep Lab to provide early diagnosis and treatment for these conditions.
Why This Sleep Lab Matters
The new facility, led by an Associate Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, was formally launched by the Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur. It aims to support patients by providing accurate, early diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for sleep-related health issues.
“Sleep disorders are often overlooked, but they can seriously affect heart health, mental well-being, and daily life,” said Dr. Joshi. “This lab will help people get the help they need without having to travel far.”
What the Sleep Lab Offers
The Sleep Lab will conduct Polysomnography—a painless overnight test that monitors:
- Brain waves
- Heart rate
- Breathing patterns
- Oxygen levels
- Muscle activity
This helps detect a wide range of sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
The Alarming Reality of OSA in India
Recent studies show that nearly 11% of Indian adults—that’s around 104 million people—suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Many are unaware of it, mistaking signs like loud snoring as normal. If left untreated, OSA can lead to:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Chronic fatigue
These conditions can reduce productivity, lower quality of life, and increase the risk of long-term complications.
Why Early Detection Is Crucial
Sleep disorders often go undiagnosed due to:
- Lack of awareness
- Limited access to specialized facilities
- Misconceptions (like snoring being a sign of deep sleep)
“We want to break these myths,” said Dr. Sryma PB. “The new Sleep Lab is not just about treatment—it’s about educating the public and saving lives through early intervention.”
A Step Toward Better Sleep Health in India
This initiative is particularly important as obesity, a major risk factor for sleep apnea, continues to rise across the country. The new AIIMS Nagpur Sleep Lab offers a solution that is both accessible and advanced, helping doctors and patients fight back against undiagnosed sleep disorders.
