In a major step towards affordable and transparent healthcare, the Delhi Government has issued a new directive: all government hospitals and health centers must now procure medicines exclusively from Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
This decision, led by the Health Minister, is aimed at ensuring the availability of quality medicines at low cost for all patients. The initiative will also help reduce unnecessary spending, remove irregularities in the procurement process, and bring greater transparency to how medicines are sourced in government hospitals.
🏥 What’s Changing for Hospitals?
As per the new policy:
- All Delhi government hospitals and health centers must buy medicines only from Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras (PMBJK).
- Local or outside purchases are allowed only in emergencies.
- Hospitals must prepare a list of essential medicines and start procurement from Jan Aushadhi Kendras immediately.
- The government is also setting up Jan Aushadhi stores in six hospitals, with plans to expand across more hospitals soon.
đź’Š What Is a Jan Aushadhi Kendra?
Jan Aushadhi Kendras are government-supported medical stores under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). These stores provide generic medicines at highly affordable prices, often 50% to 90% cheaper than branded medicines while maintaining quality.
🔍 Why This Move Matters
The decision was taken after a review meeting on March 6, 2025, where the health minister assessed the current state of government hospital services. Here’s why this change is important:
âś… Affordable healthcare: Patients will now get medicines at reduced costs.
âś… Quality assurance: All Jan Aushadhi medicines are quality-checked and approved by the government.
âś… Transparency: This ends the confusion or misuse in medicine purchasing processes.
âś… Wider access: These Kendras also benefit people living near government hospitals, not just admitted patients.
âś… Improved hospital standards: The move aims to offer facilities on par with private hospitals in public healthcare.
đź“‘ Need for Partnerships and Smooth Supply
The Health Minister also stressed the importance of signing MoUs with authorized suppliers under the Department of Pharmaceuticals to ensure the continuous availability of medicines in all Delhi government hospitals.
This will help avoid shortages and ensure that all facilities are well-stocked with essential drugs through a centralized and accountable supply chain.
🏥 Delhi’s Vision: Affordable Medicines, Better Healthcare
With this move, the Delhi government is making it clear that patient welfare comes first. By relying on Jan Aushadhi Kendras, they aim to ensure every patient—regardless of their background—gets safe, effective, and affordable medicines without delays or extra costs.
