In a proud step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, is all set to install and evaluate the first indigenously developed MRI scanner in India. This move could mark a major shift in reducing dependence on imported medical devices and lowering patients’ MRI scan costs.
🧠 What’s Special About This MRI Machine?
This new 1.5 Tesla MRI system has been developed by SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research)—a research body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The project, called IMRI – Indigenous Magnetic Resonance Imaging, began in 2014 as a national mission to design, build, and test a homegrown MRI machine that matches global standards in quality and performance.
🏥 AIIMS Leads the Way in Clinical Trials
AIIMS Director shared that AIIMS will install the indigenous MRI scanner for clinical evaluation by October 2025. As India’s top hospital, AIIMS has worked with the world’s best diagnostic technologies and will now help test this Made-in-India MRI scanner by providing technical feedback to improve its design and functionality.
This is not just a trial—it’s a milestone in India’s medical innovation and affordability journey.
🌐 Why Is This a Big Deal?
- 🇮🇳 Reduces import dependency: Currently, 80–85% of India’s medical devices are imported.
- 💰 Cuts healthcare costs: Imported MRI machines are expensive. Indigenous alternatives can reduce the cost of MRI scans for patients.
- 🏭 Boosts Indian manufacturing: This project supports the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme to encourage local manufacturing of advanced medical devices.
- ⚙️ Promotes self-reliance in healthcare technology and diagnostics.
🧪 Other Devices Being Made in India Under PLI Scheme
Thanks to the PLI scheme, India has started manufacturing seven advanced medical devices, including:
- MRI machines
- CT scanners
- LINAC (Linear Accelerators)
- Cath Labs
- Dialysis Machines
- Rotational Cobalt Machines
- Heart Valves
This will not only reduce costs but also improve access to advanced healthcare in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
🌟 A Step Towards Affordable, High-Tech Healthcare
The success of India’s first Indigenous MRI scanner could pave the way for:
- Lower-cost imaging services in hospitals
- Faster and localized servicing of medical devices
- Growth in medical R&D and engineering sectors
- Increased access to diagnostic care in rural areas
This innovation holds great promise not just for hospitals and diagnostic centers, but for millions of patients who depend on timely and affordable imaging services.
✅ Are You Ready for the Next Phase of Indian Medical Innovation?
If you’re a hospital administrator, radiologist, or healthcare provider, this is the time to explore indigenous medical technologies that offer both quality and cost efficiency.
Together, let’s build a healthcare ecosystem that’s affordable, accessible, and truly Atmanirbhar.
