Amravati’s First Lady Gynecologist: Built 2 Hospitals & Still Learning at 60!

Dr. Shubhangi Mundhada’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. From humble beginnings to becoming one of the first postgraduate gynecologists in Amravati, Maharashtra, her life has been marked by resilience, pioneering spirit, and a deep commitment to both medicine and family.

Academic Roots and Early Practice

Dr. Shubhangi completed her MBBS and MD from the prestigious B.J. Medical College, Pune. She was among the top candidates in her merit list and secured a 3-year residency in gynecology—a rare and competitive opportunity during her time. Her residency was rigorous, filled with long hours, emergencies, and a steep learning curve. However, it laid a strong foundation for her career, instilling discipline, compassion, and unwavering clinical acumen.

Founding Her Practice in Amravati

In 1988, Dr. Shubhangi, alongside her husband, a urologist, moved back to Amravati to start their practice. They converted their residential plot into a hospital. Despite challenges like a lack of anesthetists, proper infrastructure, and equipment in the early years, her dedication prevailed. Their first surgical case, a tubectomy, was performed under resource-limited conditions, yet it was a success and a symbol of their resolve.

Legacy of Medical Excellence

For nearly 25 years, her husband remained the only urologist in the region, while Dr. Shubhangi rose to prominence as a leading gynecologist. Over the years, they built a 30-bed hospital, later expanding to a second 15-bed hospital. Together, they created a multi-generational medical family with their son becoming an onco-surgeon, daughter-in-law a gynecologist and laparoscopist, and another son pursuing a PhD in quantum computing at Yale University.

Pioneering Initiatives in Amravati

Dr. Shubhangi is a true visionary. She introduced endoscopy, infertility treatment, and was the first to perform IUI (intrauterine insemination) in Amravati. Despite receiving training in IVF, she couldn’t begin the practice due to time constraints, but now mentors her daughter-in-law, who is planning to establish it.

Passion for Public Health and Education

Her commitment extends beyond private practice. She has taken up cervical cancer prevention as a mission. She became a certified colposcopist at the age of 59 and is now a master trainer in the FOXY-IMA HPV vaccination awareness program. Her goal is to contribute to making India cervical cancer-free by 2030 through education, vaccination, and screening.

Balancing Career and Family

Dr. Shubhangi emphasizes the importance of prioritizing family. She made the conscious decision to scale back her evening OPD so she could be present for her children. She planned her clinical work around their school hours and even moved to Pune temporarily to support her son’s academic aspirations. Her children studied in Marathi medium schools, a decision she defends for better conceptual understanding.

Financial Wisdom and Entrepreneurship

Though she initially had no exposure to financial markets, her husband introduced her to investments. Today, she actively manages finances, mutual funds, hospital renovations, and even agricultural ventures. She stresses the need for doctors to manage their hospitals efficiently, backed by her own MHA degree.

Joining the Doctorpreneur Academy: A Turning Point

Despite her clinical success, Dr. Shubhangi felt the need to upgrade digitally. She had previously enrolled in a digital marketing course but found it hard to stay consistent. That changed after she joined the Doctorpreneur Academy in 2021. With guidance tailored for medical professionals, she found purpose, community, and direction. She learned how to enhance her digital presence, understood the value of artificial intelligence in healthcare, and became a Diamond Member committed to continuous growth.

The Academy helped her stay updated, implement digital tools in her practice, and guide younger doctors with her experience. Today, she is a role model in both the offline and online healthcare community.

Final Thoughts

Dr. Shubhangi’s journey exemplifies dedication, learning, and evolution. From being a pioneering gynecologist to a digital learner and mentor, she embodies the essence of a Doctorpreneur. Her story continues to inspire, guide, and empower generations of doctors who aspire to build a meaningful legacy in medicine.
