In a proud moment for the country, India has been officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem. This major milestone was announced at the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78) held in Geneva, where WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus presented the Certificate of Elimination to the Indian delegation.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda celebrated this achievement, calling it a “proud moment for the nation” and a sign of India’s successful public health strategies. He credited the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for prioritizing preventive and inclusive healthcare, which continues to gain global recognition.
🌍 What Is Trachoma?
Trachoma is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) and one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide. It spreads through poor hygiene and can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated. Eliminating it as a public health problem means that India has successfully reduced the disease to very low levels, with sustainable systems in place to prevent its return.
India’s Public Health Achievement
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), this global recognition highlights:
- India’s long-term commitment to disease elimination
- It’s strong focus on preventive healthcare
- Continued efforts toward the goal of “Health for All”
India’s active participation in global health initiatives was demonstrated by its delegation at WHA78, led by Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary at the MoHFW.
The Ministry stated, “India’s presence at the World Health Assembly reflects our growing leadership in global health governance and commitment to ending public health challenges like trachoma.”
🌐 Why This Matters for the World
India’s success story in eliminating trachoma is an example of what strong public health systems, community outreach, and government commitment can achieve. It sets a benchmark for other countries still battling neglected tropical diseases, and reinforces India’s role in advancing international health collaborations.
