India’s First Integrated MBBS-BAMS Course to Launch at JIPMER

In a bold move towards integrating modern and traditional healthcare systems, the Union Government plans to launch India’s first MBBS-BAMS integrated course at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) in Puducherry.

The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH, Prataprao Jadhav, during the inauguration of the renovated Emergency and Trauma Care Centre at JIPMER.

🩺 What is This New Course?

The new course will combine:

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) – focused on modern allopathic medicine
  • BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) – concentrates on Ayurvedic treatments

This means students will be trained in both systems under one academic programme. The course is currently in the planning stage, and a new syllabus is being developed.

🧠 The Background

This is not the first step in integration. In recent years:

  • The National Medical Commission (NMC) made it mandatory for medical colleges to set up a Department of Integrative Medicine Research.
  • The MBBS foundation course now includes orientation on AYUSH and the history of medicine.
  • Electives under MBBS already feature the Indian Systems of Medicine.

However, these steps received criticism from parts of the medical community, who raised concerns about “mixopathy” – the blending of different medical systems. Many doctors fear that by 2030, India could be producing hybrid doctors with mixed training in allopathy and Ayurveda.

🏥 What Else is Happening at JIPMER?

  • A 470-bed hospital is being built at the Karaikal campus of JIPMER.
  • Outpatient services are expected to begin by January 2027, and the hospital is set to be fully functional by June 2027.
  • A proposal for a new medical college in Puducherry is under review.

💬 What Does This Mean for the Future of Healthcare?

The integration of Ayurveda and Allopathy is a historic step. Supporters believe it will give medical students a broader understanding of health and treatment systems. Critics, however, urge caution and want clear boundaries and high standards to be maintained for patient safety.

At The Doctorpreneur Academy, we believe in staying informed and prepared. Whether you’re a medical student, educator, or practitioner, it’s important to understand how medical education is evolving and what it means for your future practice.
