Mental and brain health in India is finally getting the attention it deserves. Niti Aayog, along with top healthcare institutions, is in the final stages of preparing a National Brain Health Blueprint to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neurological and cognitive disorders.
This new roadmap focuses on reducing the rising number of cases related to dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and stroke across India.
What’s the Plan?
According to officials, work on this project has been ongoing for over a year. Niti Aayog is working closely with:
- Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IBHAS)
- National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS)
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
- Private sector psychiatrists and psychologists
The aim is to build a strong service model similar to a Brain Health Clinic, where professionals can:
- Identify early signs of cognitive decline
- Improve brain health quality
- Suggest lifestyle changes and medical interventions to prevent dementia and related disorders
Why This Matters
India currently has around 8.8 million people affected by dementia, and this number is expected to grow to 17 million by 2036 — a 93% increase, according to the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also reports that India has a mental health burden of 2,443 DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) per 10,000 people. Mental health issues are already causing an estimated $1.03 trillion economic loss from 2012 to 2030.
The need for a national plan is urgent. According to the Ministry of Health, 15% of India’s adult population experiences mental health issues, with urban areas showing a higher rate of 13.5% compared to 6.9% in rural regions.
