Imagine going for an eye test without any machines, painful procedures, or discomfort. Just a drop of your tears could tell doctors whether you have an eye disease or not. Sounds like the future, right? Well, that future is now becoming a reality.
A breakthrough in eye care has recently been made in India. Delhi-based biotech company Vgenomics has partnered with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital to introduce a new, painless method to detect keratoconus—a serious eye disease that affects the cornea.
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease where the cornea (the clear, outer layer of your eye) gets thinner and weaker. This leads to blurred vision, and if not treated early, it can cause permanent vision loss. The problem with current detection methods is that they only work after the damage has started.
That’s why early detection is extremely important. It’s estimated that more than 2% of India’s population suffers from this disease, and it’s spreading fast in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as well.
Tears Hold the Answer
In a first-of-its-kind discovery, Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, with the help of Vgenomics, has found a new protein biomarker called VSP-2224, present in tears. This tear-based diagnostic is non-invasive, painless, and super effective. Even before symptoms of keratoconus appear, this test can catch the disease early.
The technology uses AI and Vgenomics’ advanced RgenX-LENS platform to make this detection possible. This means better treatment, faster recovery, and no unnecessary discomfort for patients.
What’s Next?
Right now, clinical trials are being done to validate VSP-2224 in different groups—patients, healthy individuals, and those under treatment. Alongside, Vgenomics is developing a diagnostic kit called OcuTear, which will help doctors detect keratoconus and other surface eye diseases quickly at the clinic itself.
