In a big step towards digital healthcare, Bihar has now become the top state in India for paperless hospital registrations. More than 91% of patients in Bihar’s government hospitals are now using QR code-based digital systems to register for OPD visits, as per data from the Bihar State Government and the Union Health Ministry.
This digital process is part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The feature, called “Scan and Share”, helps patients skip long queues and avoid filling out paperwork every time they visit a doctor.
How It Works:
Patients scan a QR code, share their basic information, and access health services without paperwork. They also get a unique ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) ID, which safely stores their electronic health records (EHR).
This major shift didn’t happen overnight. In April 2024, only 4% of patients used the digital system. But after Bihar integrated this feature with the Mukhyamantri Digital Health Yojana (MDHY), usage skyrocketed.
The digital transformation is also supported by BHAVYA (Bihar Health Application Visionary Yojana for All). This platform tracks hospital services, monitors doctor attendance, and provides data that helps in smart policy-making.
Why It Matters:
- Patient waiting times reduced: From 70 minutes in August 2023 to just 47 minutes by May 2025.
- More punctual services: Average first registration now starts at 8:31 AM, earlier than before.
- Bihar has completed 2.95 crore OPD registrations through this system—more than any other state, including Uttar Pradesh.
