The Karnataka Government is all set to introduce a modern and smart way to track attendance through a new system called KAAMS – Karnataka Advanced Attendance Management System. This new system will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to make attendance tracking more accurate, secure, and transparent.
How Will KAAMS Work?
Government employees will now mark attendance through a mobile app by:
- Taking a selfie at their workplace
- The app checks their location using geofencing (within 100–200 meters of the office)
- The selfie is verified using facial recognition against their Aadhaar photo
This means no more biometric machines or paper registers. The system will ensure that employees are physically present at their designated location, making it harder to fake attendance.
Why This Matters
Karnataka has over 5 lakh government employees working across 70 departments. Until now, many still used outdated methods like manual registers or card swipes, especially in schools and health departments. These systems are easy to manipulate or skip.
With KAAMS, all that changes. The system will:
- Capture real-time data
- Send alerts to department heads for late arrivals or early departures
- Improve accountability and reduce fraud
- Enhance operational efficiency
Who Developed It?
KAAMS is developed by the Centre for e-Governance under the Department for Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR). The pilot project was tested successfully in the health department, where it helped track doctors and staff in real time at hospitals and health centres.
The government has also confirmed that employee data will stay secure and will not be shared with private companies.
