Southern Railway Launches First-of-its-Kind Telemedicine Network Under e-Sanjeevani Scheme

In a major step towards digital healthcare, Southern Railway has launched a first-of-its-kind telemedicine link connecting remote railway health units and divisional hospitals with the Headquarters Hospital in Perambur. This initiative is part of the Government of India’s e-Sanjeevani scheme, aimed at expanding healthcare access through technology.

What Does the New System Do?

The new telemedicine network enables:

  • Real-time video consultations between remote medical units and specialist doctors at the headquarters
  • Live sharing of diagnostics like X-rays and ECGs, helping in faster and better clinical decisions
  • Improved care for patients in remote railway locations without needing to travel far

This is the first initiative of its kind in Indian Railways to offer such a connected care experience.

Official Launch Highlights

The telemedicine facility was inaugurated by the General Manager at the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital in Perambur. He even joined a live consultation with the Divisional Railway Hospital in Madurai to showcase how the system works in real time.

Other upgrades launched included:

  • A digital queue management system
  • New signage boards for better patient navigation at the OPD block

Singh also emphasized the need for high-speed internet connectivity across all railway health units to make the system more effective and accessible.

Why This Matters

This move brings specialist and super-specialist care to patients in even the most remote railway health centers. It reduces delays in diagnosis, saves travel time, and ensures timely treatment through digital consultation.

Such telemedicine systems proved extremely valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic, and now Indian Railways is leading by example in making it a permanent solution.

At The Doctorpreneur Academy, we are excited to see public healthcare systems embracing telemedicine and digital transformation. This model shows how large institutions like Indian Railways can use technology to improve access, efficiency, and patient satisfaction.
