Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Doctors usually detect it through blood tests, MRI scans, and biopsies. However, some of these tests can be uncomfortable and may lead to the overdiagnosis of low-risk cancers. Now, researchers at the University of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center have introduced a new urine-based test that could make detection easier and more accurate.
A Simple, Non-Invasive Test
This urine test, called MyProstateScore 2.0 (MPS2), checks for 18 specific genes linked to high-grade prostate cancer. This could help doctors identify aggressive cases while avoiding unnecessary procedures for low-risk patients.
Previously, patients needed a digital rectal exam (DRE) before providing a urine sample for this test. However, researchers have now modified the method so that MPS2 works without requiring a rectal exam, making it much more comfortable and practical for men.
Why This Test is a Game-Changer
The study involved 266 men who provided urine samples without undergoing a rectal exam. The results showed that MPS2 detected 94% of aggressive prostate cancers (Grade Group 2 or higher), making it more accurate than traditional PSA blood tests. Researchers also found that this test could help avoid up to 53% of unnecessary biopsies.
Potential for At-Home Testing
MPS2 could become an at-home test, allowing men to check their risk of aggressive prostate cancer from the comfort of their homes. This would help both patients and doctors by providing early detection without unnecessary stress or high costs.
Dr. Ganesh Palapattu, a professor of urology, highlighted that MPS2 could improve prostate cancer screening by focusing on men who truly need further medical attention. He also mentioned that MPS2 is much cheaper than an MRI scan, making it a cost-effective option for many patients.

Researchers plan to expand their study with a larger, more diverse population to confirm the test’s effectiveness. They are also looking at how MPS2 could be used to monitor men with low-risk prostate cancer over time.
