India’s Doctor Count Revealed: What Every Healthcare Professional Should Know

The Union Ministry of Health recently shared important updates about the availability of doctors in India, the doctor-population ratio, and the steps being taken to improve medical education and rural healthcare access. This data was presented in Parliament by the Minister of State for Health.

Total Number of Doctors in India

India currently has:

  • 13,86,150 registered allopathic doctors
  • 7,51,768 registered AYUSH doctors

Assuming that 80% of these practitioners are active, the estimated doctor-population ratio in India is 1:811. This is a good step towards achieving the WHO-recommended ratio of 1:1000.

Steps to Improve Medical Education

To meet the growing demand for qualified medical professionals, the government has made significant progress:

  • Medical colleges increased from 387 in 2014 to 780 today (a 101.5% increase).
  • MBBS seats rose from 51,348 to 1,18,190 (130% increase).
  • Postgraduate (PG) seats increased from 31,185 to 74,306 (138.3% increase).

Government Initiatives to Increase Doctors

Several schemes have been launched to increase the number of medical professionals, especially in rural areas:

  • New Medical Colleges: 109 are already functional under the centrally sponsored scheme.
  • AIIMS Expansion: 22 AIIMS approved; undergraduate courses have begun in 19.
  • Super Specialty Blocks: 66 out of 75 approved projects completed under PMSSY.
  • The age limit was extended to 70 years for medical faculty appointments.
  • DNB degrees are now accepted for faculty positions.

Measures to Encourage Doctors in Rural and Remote Areas

The government is offering both monetary and non-monetary incentives to motivate doctors to serve in rural and hard-to-reach areas:

  • Hard area allowance and residential quarters for doctors.
  • Honorariums for specialists like gynecologists, pediatricians, and anesthetists.
  • Flexible salary options under “You Quote, We Pay”.
  • PG seat preference for doctors working in remote areas.
  • Multi-skilling programs and continuous training under NHM.

Enhancing the Quality of Medical Education

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken steps to align India’s medical education with global standards:

  • Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) launched in 2021.
  • Family Adoption Programme (FAP): Students adopt families in rural areas to understand their healthcare needs.
  • District Residency Program: PG students spend 3 months in district hospitals.
  • Mentor-Mentee Programs and regular monitoring using digital tools.

Promoting Medical Research and Development

To boost research and innovation, the NMC is:

  • Encouraging multi-disciplinary research and collaboration with bodies like ICMR, DBT, and DST.
  • Conducting faculty development workshops.
  • Including research methodology in the PG curriculum.
  • Supporting the setup of Institutional Ethics Committees.

This is creating a stronger research culture in medical institutions across India.

Addressing Child Malnutrition in India

The government is also tackling malnutrition and undernutrition, especially in tribal and rural areas, through:

  • Mission Poshan 2.0 – Promoting maternal and child nutrition.
  • Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) – Providing fortified food to children and mothers.
  • Anaemia Mukt Bharat – Combating anemia among women and children.
  • Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres, the MAA programme for breastfeeding, and National Deworming Day are also part of this strategy.

Final Thoughts

India is making big strides in strengthening its healthcare system, increasing the number of medical professionals, improving education standards, and ensuring better healthcare in rural and underserved areas. These steps are vital for building a healthier nation.
