AYUSH Goes Global: India Signs 75 MoUs to Promote Traditional Medicine Worldwide

India is taking big steps to make AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) a globally recognized system of medicine. The Ministry of Ayush has signed 75 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to promote Indian traditional medicine across the world and launched a special scheme to support international collaboration.

Let’s take a closer look at what this means for the AYUSH community and the healthcare sector.

🌐 What Is the International Cooperation Scheme?

The Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of International Cooperation (PIC) is run by the Ministry of Ayush to support:

  • AYUSH manufacturers and service providers in expanding globally
  • Export of AYUSH products and therapies
  • Academic partnerships, including establishing AYUSH Academic Chairs in foreign countries
  • International training programs, workshops, and conferences
  • Yoga promotion and awareness activities

🀝 75 MoUs Signed

To strengthen India’s traditional medicine systems on a global scale:

  • 24 Country-to-Country MoUs
  • 51 Institute-to-Institute MoUs

These MoUs focus on collaboration in research, education, product development, and services in the AYUSH domain.

πŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈ Yoga’s Global Reach

Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) in 2014. Since then:

  • Over β‚Ή161 crore has been invested in IDY celebrations worldwide
  • Participation continues to grow across cultures and countries
  • Yoga has become a key symbol of India’s soft power and health diplomacy

🏫 Yoga in Schools

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) now includes Yoga as a part of Health and Physical Education:

  • Compulsory for Class I to X, optional for Class XI and XII
  • NCERT has developed syllabi and modules for children aged 8–18 years
  • These materials are freely available at www.ncert.nic.in

πŸŽ“ Yoga Certification and Career Opportunities

To professionalize Yoga:

  • The Yoga Certification Board (YCB) certifies Yoga professionals
  • Sets training standards and syllabi
  • Helps individuals build careers as certified Yoga instructors
  • Promotes Classical Yoga through recognized and accredited institutions

Why This Matters

This movement supports:

βœ… More opportunities for AYUSH professionals, researchers, and educators
βœ… A boost to medical tourism and exports of Indian wellness products
βœ… Greater career pathways in Yoga and alternative medicine
βœ… Increased international awareness of India’s ancient healthcare systems
