Stanford Medicine has introduced ChatEHR, a new AI-powered tool that helps doctors and healthcare staff quickly access patient records using natural language questions, just like talking to a chatbot!

Similar to tools like GPT-4, ChatEHR is designed to make it easier for clinicians to find information from a patient’s medical history, get quick chart summaries, and reduce the time spent searching through files.

💡 What is ChatEHR?

ChatEHR is a large language model (LLM) built into Stanford’s electronic medical record (EMR) system. Doctors can ask it questions such as:

• “When was the patient’s last CT scan?”
• “What medications is the patient currently taking?”
• “Has the patient had any recent surgeries?”

The tool gives instant answers by securely pulling information from the patient’s EMR. This means doctors get faster access to data, so they can focus more on patient care.

⚙️ How Is It Being Used?

Right now, 33 doctors, nurses, and physician assistants are using ChatEHR to test how well it works in real-life situations. It’s not meant to give medical advice, but it saves time by finding the right information faster.

An early doctor user of ChatEHR shared,

“It helps us get the info we need quickly, so we can spend more time with patients instead of searching records.”

The team is also building automations using AI that support clinical decisions. For example, one automation checks if a patient can be moved to another hospital to free up beds, improving patient flow and care access.

Stanford is also testing MedHELM, an open-source tool to evaluate how AI tools like ChatEHR perform in real-world hospital settings. The goal is to improve ChatEHR further and possibly make it available more widely in the future.
