PGI Launches WHO-Certified Next-Gen TB Testing Facility

The Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone by launching a WHO-certified next-generation sequencing (NGS) tuberculosis testing facility. This state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for Tuberculosis is equipped with the latest molecular diagnostic tools, placing it among the most advanced labs in the world.

What Makes This Facility Special?

The new TB testing lab offers high-end molecular diagnostic tests, including next-generation sequencing (NGS), a globally recognized and WHO-recommended technique for diagnosing drug-resistant tuberculosis quickly and accurately.

According to the SGPGI’s nodal officer, the lab:

  • Provides comprehensive testing, including culture-based drug susceptibility testing, line probe assays, and XDR CBNAAT.
  • Uses NGS to create personalized TB treatment plans for patients.
  • Will serve as the apex lab for drug-resistant TB cases across Uttar Pradesh, supporting patients referred from several districts.

A Leap Towards a TB-Free India

NGS technology allows for rapid genetic analysis to identify mutations associated with drug resistance in TB. Unlike traditional culture-based methods, which are time-consuming, NGS delivers faster and more accurate results.

This innovation aligns with India’s goal of becoming TB-free by 2025, as NGS enables healthcare providers to tailor treatment plans for even the most difficult-to-treat cases.

Collaborative Efforts

The lab has been developed with support from the Uttar Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Department and Indian Oil Corporation, showcasing a collaborative approach to advancing healthcare infrastructure.

How This Benefits Healthcare Providers

  1. Faster Diagnosis: Rapid detection of drug-resistant TB ensures timely and effective treatment.
  2. Personalized Care: NGS technology helps doctors design targeted treatment plans based on the patient’s genetic TB profile.
  3. Improved Outcomes: Early and precise diagnosis reduces the spread of resistant TB strains and improves patient recovery rates.

Conclusion

The SGPGI next-gen TB testing facility represents a groundbreaking step in the fight against tuberculosis, offering world-class diagnostic tools to patients and healthcare providers alike. It not only enhances the quality of care but also strengthens India’s efforts to eradicate TB by 2025.
