The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) has released its 6th edition of accreditation standards, bringing important changes to improve hospital quality, patient safety, and healthcare efficiency. These updates streamline processes, strengthen compliance, and introduce new areas of focus like preventive healthcare and sustainability.

If your hospital is preparing for NABH accreditation, here’s a simple breakdown of the major updates you need to know!

🔹 Key Updates in NABH 6th Edition

Objective Elements (OEs) Adjusted

  • The number of Objective Elements (OEs) has been reduced from 651 to 639 to simplify hospital processes while maintaining quality.
  • However, Core OEs have increased to 105, ensuring stronger patient safety measures.

Two New Standards Introduced

1️. Promotive & Preventive Health – Hospitals must now focus on educating patients about disease prevention and overall wellness.
2️. Sustainability in Healthcare – Encourages hospitals to adopt eco-friendly practices, waste management, and energy conservation 🌱.

Strengthened Guidelines for Critical Services

  • Transfusion & Obstetric Services – Now aligned with the Ministry of Health (MoHFW) and international standards to enhance patient safety.
  • Hospital Security & Cybersecurity – New measures ensure better data protection, digital security, and compliance against cyber threats.

HIC Renamed to IPC

  • The Hospital Infection Control (HIC) guidelines are now Infection Prevention & Control (IPC), emphasizing a proactive approach to infection management.

Compliance Language Strengthened

  • The word ‘Shall’ has replaced ‘Should, Will & Would’ in the guidelines, making compliance mandatory rather than suggestive.

🔹 Why do These Changes Matter for Healthcare Professionals?

📌 Simplifies the accreditation process while keeping hospital operations efficient.
📌 Enhances patient safety and infection control with more rigorous standards.
📌 Promotes preventive healthcare by encouraging patient education and awareness.
📌 Strengthens hospital cybersecurity, ensuring protection from digital threats.
