In a progressive move to address the growing mental health crisis, the Delhi government is set to launch a dedicated mental health programme rooted in the AYUSH system (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy). This initiative will focus on three major groups: children, the working class, and senior citizens.
Announced by Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh, this is the first focused mental health programme under the AYUSH system, combining traditional healing with modern mental health support.
🧠 Why This Mental Health Initiative Matters
Mental health concerns are on the rise across all age groups:
- Children are showing early signs of anxiety, aggression, and academic stress.
- Working professionals are struggling with burnout, work-life imbalance, and job pressure.
- Senior citizens face loneliness, isolation, and age-related mental health challenges.
- Women, managing both work and home, are particularly vulnerable to emotional exhaustion.
Recognising this growing burden, Delhi’s AYUSH-based programme aims to offer a holistic, non-judgmental, and easily accessible mental health support system for all.
📞 Four-Tier Mental Health Support Model
The programme will follow a structured four-level care system:
- Teleconsultation (Helpline):
A person can call anonymously and speak with a trained mental health counsellor. - Counselling:
If needed, the person will be guided through structured counselling sessions. - OPD Services at AYUSH Hospitals:
When in-person evaluation or treatment is required, the individual will be referred to AYUSH OPDs in hospitals at Karol Bagh, Defence Colony, Najafgarh, and Nanak Pura. - Referral for Specialised Care:
In cases where advanced psychiatric help is necessary, patients will be referred to allopathic or psychiatric facilities through Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
This system ensures step-by-step care, starting from a phone call to hospital-level mental health intervention, all under the AYUSH healthcare umbrella.
🌿 Rooted in Tradition, Built for Modern Needs
Unlike conventional mental health programmes, this one is built on India’s traditional systems of medicine, like:
- Ayurveda for body-mind balance
- Yoga and Naturopathy for stress reduction
- Unani and Siddha for holistic healing
- Homoeopathy for emotional support
By using natural, accessible, and culturally familiar methods, the programme hopes to make mental health support less intimidating and more inclusive.
🧏 Anonymity, Accessibility, and Affordability
A key highlight is that this service will be anonymous. Many people are hesitant to talk about their mental struggles due to social stigma. With this programme, anyone can:
- Call confidentially
- Book a consultation
- Get help without judgment
This barrier-free approach will especially help students, women, daily-wage earners, and older adults, who often don’t seek help until it’s too late.
🏥 Where Will the Services Be Available?
Currently, the programme will be supported through four major AYUSH teaching hospitals in Delhi:
- Karol Bagh
- Defence Colony
- Najafgarh
- Nanak Pura
These hospitals will act as the in-person care centres for OPD services and onward referrals.
