When Kids Stay Home—But Not with the Flu!

“I don’t want to go to school.” — we’ve all heard it. But when it happens often, it can be more than just a bad morning. It may be school avoidance, a sign of deeper emotional distress.

The Alarming Numbers

A new national survey by Ipsos for The Kids Mental Health Foundation found:

  • 30% of parents said their child missed over a week of school last year due to fear or anxiety.
  • 42% said their child claimed they were too unwell to attend.
  • 20% said their child was too exhausted to go.

This isn’t just about feeling “”lazy”—physical symptoms often mask underlying anxiety.

Why Kids Avoid School

According to experts, reasons include:

  • Bullying or social anxiety
  • Test fear of public speaking worries
  • Undiagnosed learning disabilities are making school stressful
  • Major school transitions (new grade, new school)

When kids avoid school, keeping them home might feel protective—but it often increases anxiety over time.

What Parents Can Do

  • Talk openly about feelings and fears
  • Be proactive—know available resources before a crisis
  • Seek professional help early if avoidance continues for days
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can reduce anxiety and improve attendance

What This Means for Doctors in India

While this is U.S. data, school avoidance is a growing issue globally, including in India. Pediatricians, child psychologists, and family doctors must:

  • Learn to identify emotional reasons behind physical complaints
  • Collaborate with schools for early intervention
  • Guide parents towards behavioral therapies rather than prolonged absence
