The Union Government has announced the Padma Awards 2025, celebrating the outstanding contributions of 10 individuals in the field of medicine. These awards recognize exceptional service and achievements that have advanced healthcare in India and beyond. Here is a look at this year’s recipients and their remarkable work:
Padma Vibhushan:
Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy: A pioneer in gastroenterology, Dr. Reddy is the Chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad. He is known for revolutionizing therapeutic endoscopy and is the first Telugu doctor to receive all three Padma awards: Padma Shri (2002), Padma Bhushan (2016), and Padma Vibhushan (2025). His work has placed India on the global healthcare map.
Padma Bhushan:
Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram: A renowned cardiac surgeon from Kerala, Dr. Periappuram is credited with performing India’s first successful heart transplant and introducing advanced cardiac surgeries in Kerala. He is the founder of the Heart Care Foundation, offering financial support to underprivileged heart patients.
Mr. Pankaj Patel: While awarded under the field of Trade and Industry, Mr. Patel’s contributions to medicine through Zydus Lifesciences are significant. As Chairman, he has led innovations in pharmaceutical research, drug development, and global healthcare solutions.
Padma Shri:
Dr. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra: A neurosurgeon recognized for leading the successful separation of conjoined twins in 2017 at AIIMS, Delhi. He has also contributed significantly to neurosurgical research and medical education.
Dr. Budhendra Kumar Jain: An ophthalmologist who established a state-of-the-art eye hospital in Chitrakoot, performing over 1 lakh eye surgeries annually to serve rural communities.
Dr. Hemant Kumar: A nephrologist from Bihar known for spreading awareness about kidney disease and providing accessible treatment to patients.
Dr. Neerja Bhatla: A gynecologist specializing in cervical cancer prevention and management. Dr. Bhatla has led numerous research projects and developed resource-based guidelines for HPV vaccination and cancer screening.
Dr. Soniya Nityanand: An immunologist and bone marrow specialist, Dr. Nityanand has conducted pioneering research on stem cell transplantation and hematological disorders. She is the Vice Chancellor of King George’s Medical University.
Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshamane: An oncologist who has advanced breast cancer research and provided free treatment to economically disadvantaged patients in Karnataka.
Dr. Vilas Dangre: A homeopath who, despite losing his eyesight, has dedicated over 50 years to treating over 1 lakh patients at nominal costs, including economically weaker sections.
Smt. Sheikha Shaikha Ali Al-Jaber Al-Sabah: Honored for her contributions to promoting yoga and wellness in the Gulf region, fostering cultural exchange between India and Kuwait.
