AIIMS Raipur’s Historic Swap Kidney Transplant: A New Hope for Organ Donation in India

A big milestone in Indian healthcare!
AIIMS Raipur has successfully performed its first Swap Kidney Transplant (also known as Kidney Paired Donation – KPT), becoming the first newer AIIMS and the first government hospital in Chhattisgarh to achieve this.

This life-saving surgery highlights AIIMS Raipur’s growing excellence in advanced organ transplantation and innovative patient care.

🏥 What is a Swap Kidney Transplant?

In a Swap Kidney Transplant, two patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who have willing but incompatible donors exchange donors.
Each donor gives a kidney to the other patient, ensuring blood group compatibility and increasing the chance of a successful transplant.

According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Swap Transplants can increase organ donations by up to 15% across the country.
To further promote this, NOTTO is planning a ‘One Nation One Swap Transplant Programme’.

🌟 AIIMS Raipur’s Landmark Case

  • Two male ESRD patients (aged 39 and 41) from Bilaspur had been on dialysis for three years.
  • Their wives came forward as donors but had incompatible blood groups (B+ & O+, and O+ & B+).
  • With careful planning, AIIMS Raipur coordinated a successful donor swap, making transplantation possible for both patients.
  • The surgeries were conducted on 15th March 2025, and all four individuals are now recovering well under close observation.

This historic transplant reflects AIIMS Raipur’s dedication to expanding organ donation and offering new hope to patients.

📈 AIIMS Raipur’s Achievements in Organ Transplant

  • First among the newer AIIMS to start Deceased Donor Organ Donation and Deceased Donor Kidney Transplantation.
  • First in Chhattisgarh to start Deceased Donor Paediatric Kidney Transplantation.
  • 54 kidney transplants performed to date with 95% graft survival and 97% patient survival rates.

AIIMS Raipur is truly setting a new standard in renal transplantation and healthcare innovation in India.

🌍 Why This Matters for the Future

This achievement encourages more families to consider organ donation.
As more swap transplants are done, waiting times for kidney patients could be reduced, saving thousands of lives each year.

It also shows how government hospitals like AIIMS Raipur are driving medical innovations once thought possible only at private institutions.
