AIIMS: Shaping the Future of Healthcare and Medical Education in India

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) continues to prove its importance as a centre of innovation, learning, and patient care. During the first-ever “Best Practices” conclave held at AIIMS Nagpur, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda praised the institution’s pivotal role in transforming India’s healthcare landscape.

Virtually addressing the event, Minister Nadda stated, “Every AIIMS serves as a centre of healthcare innovation and learning.” He highlighted that AIIMS institutions are strategically located to reduce regional healthcare disparities and ensure equitable, affordable, and evidence-based services to all.

The two-day conclave, organised by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, brought together various AIIMS institutes from across India — including Bhopal, Bilaspur, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Deoghar, Jammu, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and more. Also present were representatives from the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) division and the Ministry of Defence.

The key themes discussed included:

  • Teaching-learning and research
  • Hospital services
  • Governance and patient convenience

J.P. Nadda noted that each AIIMS, as an institute of national importance, integrates clinical care, medical education, and research excellence. He also stressed the importance of sharing best practices and innovations between AIIMS institutions to promote uniform growth and high-quality standards.

From advanced infrastructure to digital learning, simulation labs, and structured mentorship programs, AIIMS institutions are setting new benchmarks in competency-based medical education.

In research, the focus has shifted to region-specific studies, ethical clinical trials, and translational research that connects the lab to real-world patient care. These efforts support interdisciplinary collaboration, vital for addressing future public health challenges.

Minister Nadda also praised patient-centric innovations such as:

  • Digital registration systems
  • Jan Aushadhi Kendras (for affordable medicines)
  • Helpdesks and e-governance tools that promote transparent administration
