In a welcome move, the Punjab government has agreed to deploy security guards at all state-run hospitals to ensure the safety of doctors and medical staff. This was confirmed by the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA), following discussions with top health officials.
This decision comes after growing concerns about violence against doctors and healthcare workers in government hospitals across Punjab.
🛡️ Security Guards to Be Posted 24×7
The security personnel will be from Punjab Ex-Servicemen Corporation (PESCO) and will be stationed at government hospitals around the clock, especially where medico-legal cases (MLCs) are handled.
Hospitals that will receive security support include:
- District Hospitals
- Sub-Divisional Hospitals
- Community Health Centres (CHCs)
- ESI Hospitals
Additional morning-hour security will also be arranged for smaller health centers where MLC services are not offered.
🤝 Government’s Response to Doctors’ Safety Concerns
The assurance was given during a meeting attended by:
- Kumar Rahul, Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare)
- Hitinder Kaur, Director of Health Services
- Anil Goyal, Director, Punjab Health Systems Corporation
PCMSA President Dr. Akhil Sareen said that this proposal was finalized after detailed discussions between:
- Health Minister Balbir Singh
- Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema
- Principal Secretary Kumar Rahul
The Finance Department is expected to give formal approval within the next 2–3 weeks.
🚨 Why This Matters: Recent Violence at Government Hospitals
In recent weeks, there have been several violent attacks on doctors and hospital staff during their duty hours. Some incidents even occurred during night shifts, putting the lives of medical professionals at serious risk.
The PCMSA had earlier raised alarms about the lack of safety measures. Despite repeated promises, no real action had been taken—until now.
The association praised the state government for finally taking this step and expressed hope that strong security arrangements will soon be implemented across all public healthcare facilities.
âś… Final Thoughts
This is a much-needed move for the safety and dignity of doctors and healthcare staff in Punjab. With rising cases of hospital violence, security must be treated as a top priority to ensure doctors can perform their duties without fear.
