The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, is taking a major step forward in making healthcare patient-friendly and tech-driven. The institute is all set to launch a smart mobile app by the end of this year to help patients navigate the hospital easily, save time, and reduce confusion.
What Will the App Do?
The app, developed in collaboration with C-DAC Noida, will include:
- Real-time indoor mapping to guide patients through hospital buildings
- QR code-based patient identification for quicker services
- Crowd management tools to reduce waiting time and avoid overcrowding
The Director of PGIMER said that this app will transform the hospital experience, making visits more smooth, efficient, and stress-free for patients and their families.
Going Fully Digital
PGIMER has also fully digitized its Hospital Information System (HIS), which now manages:
- Medicine procurement
- Indenting processes
- Integration with Ayushman Bharat for greater transparency and speed
This ensures efficient delivery of services and minimizes manual delays.
Upcoming Projects and Upgrades
PGIMER is working on a large-scale Rs 987 crore Sarangpur Project, which includes:
- A new 100-seat medical college
- Modern OPD areas for 16,000+ daily patients
- A 200-bed emergency block
- A trolley way to move patients easily between buildings
- A new Doctors’ Cafeteria and even an all-weather swimming pool
To improve safety, PGIMER will also recruit 300 ex-servicemen for campus security in the next 4-5 months.
Boosting Patient Support & Care
- Project Sarathi, a patient support program led by NSS volunteers, is now active in 34 states with over 6,400 volunteers and is set to expand to 1,467 hospitals nationwide via MyBharat.gov.in.
- Nine AMRIT pharmacies already serve 85% of the medicine needs on campus, with another store coming soon near the Emergency Block. These offer affordable medicines under Ayushman Bharat and PMJAY.
- The new Advanced Neurosciences Centre OPD will be operational in three months.
- 12-hour OT (operation theatre) shifts have increased surgeries by 30–40%, reducing patient backlog.
- The Sarangpur satellite centre construction is also underway, expected to be ready in about three years.
